Venerable Eustatie the Protopsaltis and the Putna Music School. Studies and Articles (I)

„Venerable Eustatie the Protopsaltis and the Putna Music School. Studies and Articles (I)”

The 14th-century Putna music school, with Venerable Eustatie the Protopsaltis as its iconic figure, represents a remarkable phenomenon not only for the history of Romanian musical culture but also for the history of the entire Orthodox world. At present, 20 Putna Anthologia are known, of which only 13 have survived almost intact.

The Putna musical manuscripts have been studied since the end of the 19th century in the works of important Slavic studies experts. In the second half of the 20th century, they were minutely analyzed by Romanian experts Grigore Panțiru, Gheorghe Ciobanu, Titus Moisescu and Marin Ionescu and also by foreign researchers such as Anne Pennington and Dimitrios Conomos. The conclusions of these renowned paleographers are presented in reference studies and articles proposing a complex approach to the musical phenomenon known as the Putna School. Some of the most representative studies of that period have been included in the present volume. The volume also includes musicology studies published in recent years in the Analele Putnei magazine.
